Hello again!

I guess I’ve been away from here for about a month…not intentionally. Things just got extremely hectic in my life. First there was my 25th class reunion in early October (which was great, by the way), then my band was VERY busy working that month…then in early November, my cat became horribly ill with pancreatitis (the vet gave him only a 50/50 chance), and for the past few weeks I’ve pretty much just been running myself ragged running back and forth to different vets (one of them an hour away), crying a lot, and then taking care of him and feeding and medicating him five times a day through a feeding tube in his neck. Well, good news…he’s improved a lot and his blood work came back from the vet almost at normal levels, so he’s going to make it : )

So, things have calmed down now, which is a good thing because I’ve had an awful cold and sore throat this week PLUS pink eye (YUCK!) and other things. My doctor said that from my symptoms that it was obvious that I had let myself get run down…which I knew.

Anyways, here I am again! I hadn’t weighed myself at all I think since maybe mid October, so I was a little afraid to get on the scale this morning…but it was good news! I’ve lost two pounds since last time I was here, and I certainly hadn’t been trying at all.

I hope all of my friends on here have been well! Debbie

Why do posts go into a moderation folder?

Hi all,

I just noticed I had a bunch of old posts in my “My Blog” section that required me to approve them. I’m not blocking anyone, so I don’t get why that happened? Anyways, my apologies to anyone who posted to one of my blogs over the past few weeks who didn’t see their posting go up!  Debbie

Class Reunion this weekend…

I haven’t blogged for a while because of all the drama that was going on here…but it seems safe enough now  : )

I just have five more days til my 25 year high school reunion. My weight isn’t exactly where I want it to be, but I’ve lost 25 pounds over the past few months (15 of those since I joined BS), which I’m really happy about…I’m down one size from 18 to 16 and ALMOST fitting into a size 14 now. Just for kicks I tried on my old size 18 jeans this morning, and they’re so baggy now there’s no way I can wear them…and it felt great kicking them off and slamming them into the trash like a football player spiking the ball after scoring a touchdown….YESSSSSSSS! I was thinking of saving them for doing yardwork and such, but it felt soooooo good getting rid of them.

Anyways, my goal for this coming Saturday is to drop just a few more pounds so that I can fit comfortably into those size 14 jeans (it’s a casual reunion, hence the jeans). Unfortunately I’ve been stuck on a plateau the past few days, which is VERY  frustrating with the reunion coming up.  So what I’m planning for this week is to drink lots of water and just stick to the healthy eating I’ve been doing but cut out most of the bread (which is really hard for me!) and eat more veggies…I’m also going to exercise twice a day instead of just once (a nice, brisk morning walk with my dog in the morning, and exercise bike in the evening)…and I promise myself right now that I’ll continue that plan even after the reunion.

Scale obsession…

I’ve noticed that since just before I hit my mini goal last week that I was getting more and more obsessed with weighing myself (sometimes twice a day, which makes no sense at all). I know that I’m just driving myself nuts with it because I know that a woman’s body can have a one pound gain that has more to do with water than it does fat…and just because the weight loss isn’t showing on the scale doesn’t mean I’m not losing since I more than likely lost fat but gained muscle. Anyways…I don’t know if I can stick to this, but starting today I’m going to be weighing myself ONLY at the end of the week on Friday morning and that’s it. Debbie

A GOOD trip to the doctor…

Went to my gyno today for my yearly visit. Usually I cancel that appointment three or four times because A) I know she’s going to get on me for not losing weight; and B) I don’t much like going there to begin with ; )…but I didn’t cancel this time, which I’m proud of. Anyways, I’ve lost 16 pounds recently and she noticed right away…and best of all when she took my blood pressure it was perfect, and she remarked about that because last time I’d been there it was elevated and she was concerned.  She also took blood to test my cholesterol, and I’m feeling confident that my cholesterol will be much lower than last time as well.

So, today was a good day and tomorrow I’m taking my son and his friend to the beach AND I’m not completely dreading getting into my bathing suit : )  Debbie

Drinking water and weight loss…

I found this article about the benefits of drinking water as it relates to weight loss (and more) and thought I’d share. I’ve never been a huge fan of drinking lots of water, but I’ve been doing it for a few weeks now and I’ve definitely noticed that it makes a difference. Debbie

Don’t roll your eyes! The potion for losing that excess body fat is all around you. It covers two thirds of the planet. If you eat right and exercise at the intensity, frequency and duration proper for you, but still can’t get rid of a little paunch here and there, you’re probably just not drinking enough water.

No need to get defensive. You’re actually quite normal. Most people don’t drink enough water. Most people are also carrying around a few more pounds than they would be if they did drink enough water. If you can’t seem to get that weight off, try drowning your sorrows in nature’s magical weight-loss mineral. It works, and here’s why:

“What on Earth is ‘metabolism’, anyway?” People use the term all the time, but ask them what it means and you’ll get all kinds of answers. Merriam Webster defines it as, “The process by which a substance is handled in the body.” A little vague, but that’s really all it means.

There are many forms of metabolism going on in your body right now, but the one everyone is talking about it the metabolism of fat. This is actually something that the liver does when it converts stored fat to energy. The liver has other functions, but this is one of its main jobs.

Unfortunately, another of the liver’s duties is to pick up the slack for the kidneys, which need plenty of water to work properly. If the kidneys are water-deprived, the liver has to do their work along with its own, lowering its total productivity. It then can’t metabolize fat as quickly or efficiently as it could when the kidneys were pulling their own weight. If you allow this to happen, not only are you being unfair to your liver, but you’re also setting yourself up to store fat.

“I’ve tried it and I couldn’t stand it!” The problem is that, though many decide to increase their water intake, very few stick with it. It’s understandable. During the first few days of drinking more water than your body is accustomed to, you’re running to the bathroom constantly. This can be very discouraging, and it can certainly interfere with an otherwise normal day at work. It seems that the water is coming out just as fast as it’s going in, and many people decide that their new hydration habit is fruitless.

Do take heed , though. What is really happening is that your body is flushing itself of the water it has been storing throughout all those years of “survival mode”. It takes a while, but this is a beautiful thing happening to you. As you continue to give your body all the water it could ask for, it gets rid of what it doesn’t need. It gets rid of the water it was holding onto in your ankles and your hips and thighs, maybe even around your belly. You are excreting much more than you realize. Your body figures it doesn’t need to save these stores anymore; it’s trusting that the water will keep coming, and if it does, eventually, the flushing (of both the body and the potty) will cease, allowing the human to return to a normal life. It’s true. This is called the “breakthrough point.”

One recent finding, as irresponsible as it may be, that caffeine increases the body’s fat-burning potential has many people loading up on coffee before going to the gym. This finding may hold some degree of truth in it, but caffeine is, in essence, a diuretic, and diuretics dehydrate. Caffeine may increase the heart rate, causing a few more calories to be burned, but this is at the expense of the muscles, which need water to function properly. This isn’t doing your heart any favors, either. It’s already working hard enough during your workout. Never mix caffeine and exercise. In fact, your best bet is to stay away from caffeine all together. It’s a big bully that pushes your friend water out of your system.

Water is the best beauty treatment. You’ve heard this since high school, and it’s true. Water will do wonders for your looks! It flushes out impurities in your skin, leaving you with a clear, glowing complexion. It also makes your skin look younger. Skin that is becoming saggy, either due to aging or weight loss, plumps up very nicely when the skin cells are hydrated.

In addition, it improves muscle tone. You can lift weights until you’re blue in the face, but if your muscles are suffering from a drought, you won’t notice a pleasant difference in your appearance. Muscles that have all the water they need contract more easily, making your workout more effective, and you’ll look much nicer than if you had flabby muscles under sagging skin.

“Eight glasses a day? Are you kidding?!” It’s really not that much. Eight 8-ounce glasses amount to about two quarts of water. This is okay for the average person, but if you’re overweight, you should drink another eight ounces for every 25 pounds of excess weight you carry. You should also up this if you live in a hot climate or exercise very intensely.

This water consumption should be spread out throughout the day. It’s not healthy at all to drink too much water at one time. Try to pick three or four times a day when you can have a big glass of water, and then sip in between. Don’t let yourself get thirsty. If you feel thirsty, you’re already becoming dehydrated. Drink when you’re not thirsty yet.

Do you think water is yucky? Drinking other fluids will certainly help hydrate your body, but the extra calories, sugar, additives and whatever else aren’t what you need. Try a slice of lemon or lime in the glass, or if you really think you hate water, try a flavored water. Just make sure you read the labels. Remember that you’re going to be consuming a lot of this fluid.

It’s probably a good idea to stop drinking water a good three hours before you go to bed. You know why.

“How cold should it be?” This is debatable. Most experts lean toward cold water, because the stomach absorbs it more quickly. There is also some evidence that cold water might enhance fat burning. On the other hand, warmer water is easier to drink in large quantities, and you might drink more of it without even realizing it. Do whatever suits you, here. Just drink it!

When you drink all the water you need, you will very quickly notice a decrease in your appetite, possibly even on the first day! If you’re serious about becoming leaner and healthier, drinking water is an absolute must. If you’re doing everything else right and still not seeing results, this might just what’s missing.

My New Scale…

My digital read-out scale died recently, and so I replaced it with a decent mechanical scale….I’d forgotten how much more interesting weighing myself can be!

Instead of just getting on the scale and having a number I don’t want to see flash back up at me, I am now having loads of fun trying to put one over on my new scale…

1) Shift weight back to my heels = 1 pound loss

2) Shift weight forward = 2 pound gain (oops, I’ll never do that one again)

3) Sneak up on scale and step on gingerly, holding one finger on the bathroom sink = 1 pound loss

4) Combo #1 and #3 = 2 pound loss

5) Brazenly approach scale and step on firmly = no loss/no gain (hmmm…could this be my true weight?)

6) “Adjust” scale using the little dial at the bottom because the needle isn’t quite resting on zero = 4 pounds+ loss!

6) Tap foot on scale and then walk away = just to keep scale on its toes

…and starting tomorrow, the scale gets moved around the room ; )

 Have a great day! Debbie

Now THIS is incentive to lose weight LOL

Well, I found out yesterday that my band will be doing an outdoor concert in October that is going to be televised on a local cable channel…..AAAAAACK!! LOL So, not only am I under the gun to lose weight for my 25th high school class reunion coming up at the end of September, now I’m going to be performing in front of tv cameras too.
I guess if there was any time in my life that I really needed to buckle down this is it!! I have to say that I’m VERY happy that I found this group because you all have helped a lot already. So thanks : )

When cravings change from bad to good…

…I know that I’m on the right track. Usually I crave junk food, but I’ve been eating much healthier for about a week now since I joined, and I noticed that the only true cravings I had today were for tuna fish (I definitely needed protein at the time), tomato and arugula salad, and a nectarine. That’s it! I couldn’t wait to eat the salad as I was making it…I’d bought some really gorgeous tomatos at a farmer’s market over the weekend, and they were perfectly red, ripe and wonderful…and the nectarine couldn’t have been sweeter or juicier.  Obviously, I’m also appreciating the flavors and textures of these healthy foods….something I don’t think I’ve ever really done before.

It’s 10PM, and I’m not thinking about raiding the pantry for some chips…I’m thinking about the tomatos that are still left in the fridge that I’m going to have tomorrow : ) It’s been a very good day.

Photos don’t lie…

Feeling good today because I don’t hate the photos of me taken at my band’s show yesterday. I usually cringe when I see them the day after, but not this time. I still have a long way to my goal weight, but the photos tell me there’s been a noticable change especially in my face (which, of course, is the first place I lose weight), and I’m happy about that.
